The end of the road; the beginning of a journey

I started participating in Relay for Life because I wanted to be part of something that gives voice to a great cause. So if I can get one person to donate, one person to step forward and help, it's worth it.

I started participating in Relay for Life because I wanted to be part of something that gives voice to those who don't have the means to express themselves. My mother and I have kept plastic bags with all of the names of family members past and present who have suffered from cancer. Each year that I have participated, I have done a lap around the track for each one. This year my bag of name tags has grown to 80 names. In 2011, my grandmother lost her battle with cancer. Six years ago when I started volunteering and pledging my grandmother had already fought one battle with lung cancer and luckily she survived. She has always been a strong person, not letting cancer affect her quality of life. So when I say she survived, what I really mean is that she lived. She conquered such an immense obstacle with grace and dignity. Losing her gave me even more determination to advocate for this great cause. I not only participate but I also have had the privilege of performing during the Luminary Ceremony. When I sing as the luminaries are lit, I feel like you can almost hear the light in my heart; all of the untold stories from cancer survivors can be heard when I sing. So if I can get one person to donate, one person to step forward and help, it's worth it.
Very recently I found out that I may have ovarian cancer and I know that I'd want someone to help me when I'm in need so if I can do the same for someone else it's even more rewarding. Together our battles become a war, and we the warriors become a legion. Let's fight together to make a difference. :)
Sincerely,
Melissa Kelly
