Ethical fundraising

We know that there are many worthy causes in Saskatchewan and you have a choice about whether to support us. We want to continue to earn your trust by being transparent and accountable.

We adhere to the principals of financial accountability and transparency in compliance with Imagine Canada’s Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code. By adhering to these standards, we are complying with generally accepted practices for soliciting and managing donor dollars. This is important to us because, as a donor, you are entitled to transparency and the greatest impact possible for your investment.

We also work with other organizations, such as the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Canadian Association of Gift Planners, to ensure that we’re up to date on ethical and professional fundraising practices.

Information for donors

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has a section on its website called Giving to charity: Information for donors, which offers information on:

• finding and researching registered charities
• the regulation of charities
• donation receipts and tax savings; and
• protecting yourself agaist fraudulent fundraising.

You can verify that a particular charity is authorized to issue official receipts for income tax purposes, and you can read about the activities and finances of individual registered charities.

Tax receipts

First, thank you, for thinking about making a gift to the Canadian Cancer Society. For our donors the most important reason to give is to continue the fight against cancer. At the same time, it’s just good sense to take advantage of tax savings whenever possible. There are lots of rules about when we can and when we can’t issue tax receipts. Find our more about when the Canadian Cancer Society can and cannot provide charitable tax receipts.

Look for the daffodil

Whenever you receive paper mail or e-mail about cancer, look for our proper name and daffodil symbol. There are now over 200 charities registered in Canada that include "cancer" in their name, and many of them have chosen names similar to ours. We only use our own name "Canadian Cancer Society" and we always include our trademarked daffodil design in our communications and e-mails.
