Make a difference in the federal election

Cancer and the 2008 election

Across the country, the Society’s supporters emailed their candidates on the following three election issues:

Caregiver support Caregiver support
One in four Canadians have cared for a family member or close friend with a serious health problem in the last 12 months. This often results in lost income, as well as the increased financial burden of unforeseen expenses.
Environment and health Environment and health - Community Right to Know
The Canadian Cancer Society believes that Canadians should not be exposed to cancer-causing substances at home, at work, or in their environment. The Society strongly supports a community's right to know what they are being exposed to so they can make an informed decision about their health.
Tobacco contraband Tobacco contraband
The Canadian Cancer Society is concerned about increasing levels of cigarette contraband. Cheap illegal cigarettes are encouraging youth smoking.

What are the federal political parties doing about cancer-related issues?
Dr. Barbara Whylie, CEO of the Canadian Cancer Society, wrote to the leaders of Canada’s five major federal political parties this month. She asked them to explain their party’s position on key Society priorities including caregiver support, cancer and the environment and tobacco contraband. Find out how they responded.

What is Canadian Cancer Society doing during the federal election?
The Society is working to ensure that cancer and health are top priorities in the 2008 federal electoral campaign. The Society will monitor the election for new policy initiatives, and particularly for issues important to the fight against cancer and the health of Canadians.

Why we need your help?
The Society relies on its volunteers and supporters to maintain a strong voice.

Politicians are their most attentive to public opinion during an election. The campaign period is an excellent opportunity you as a member of the public to raise your concerns about cancer and health and make your voice heard.

Make your voice heard. Together, we can make a difference.
