Cycling 800km in Memory of Tom Cameron
Thank You for visiting my personal Cops for Cancer webpage.
2017 marks my 9th year in a row as a member of Cops for Cancer and my third year as one of the captains of the team. Co-Captain Tess and I are looking forward to this 800km cycling journey representing Tour De Coast and doing all we can to help fight this disease.
To any of my friends and family, please help me reach my 2017 goal of fundraising at least $6000.00 for Cops for Cancer. One of my favourite things about Cops for Cancer is the funding that we provide to the acclaimed Camp Goodtimes in Maple Ridge BC. We send hundreds of children going through a journey with Cancer to this wonderful lakeside resort each year. I can’t say enough about what it means to them as I have seen it year after year with my own eyes. Every $1500.00 raised send another child and their family to camp.
On a personal note, I will be riding this year in memory of my good friend Tom Cameron from Maple Ridge BC. For those that didn’t know Tom, he was the ULTIMATE volunteer in the community of Maple Ridge. Over the years and into retirement he was involved with the Royal Canadian Legion, Maple Ridge Remembrance Day parade, Vancouver Sun/Province “Raise A Reader”, Elks Club, over 20 years with the Maple Ridge Christmas Hamper Society, Ghostridge, and day to day volunteer at the Albion Fairgrounds with Lorraine Bates putting the local Correctional centre inmates to work, and organizing the annual Maple Ridge CountryFest (BC’s largest Agricultural show) which is a massive endeavour in and of itself.
I met Tom four years ago at a small Cops for Cancer booth we had at the Maple Ridge Home show. We shared a few laughs that day and soon developed a friendship that would quickly grow into a special friendship. Unbeknownst to me Tom had a passion for Cops for Cancer and Camp Goodtimes which began around 15 years ago and when I stepped in we continued with his passion. So with the incredible help from Tom and Lorraine we soon began organizing our own Cops for Cancer events at the Albion Fairgrounds. Our very first year at CountryFest Cops for Cancer fundraised over $10,000.00. We soon added many other events such as the Albion Easter Egg Hunt where in 2016 over 2000 people showed up for this event.. It was Crazy !
One event Tom always talked about was the RCMP Musical ride and how back in the day the Albion Fairgrounds hosted this special event. Well after mulling it over more than once as Tom was battling this terrible disease we decided to throw our hat into the ring and apply for the event through the RCMP. Later in the year as Tom’s health deteriorated we received the good news that the Albion Fairgrounds was awarded one of the few Western Canada visits in August of 2017. Tom, Lorraine, and I were THRILLED !!
I was fortunate to visit with Tom a few times in his last couple weeks and he was a true friend to the end.
Tom, you were an amazing friend to not only me but to the entire Cops for Cancer cause and community of Maple Ridge. I will always remember your dry sense of humour and “geter done” attitude (which usually resulted in me getting a kick in the pants).
