Woohoo! Tour de Coast!
As many of you know, last year I rode the 875km Tour de North. We rode 8 days from Prince George to Prince Rupert through sun, rain, snow, wind and hail. We met amazing people in communities big and small (shout out to FORT ST JAMES) who came out and showed their support with donations, parties, home baked goods and enthusiastic fans lining the route. It was an amazing experience. I can't thank everyone enough.
New year, new challenges.
Some of you may know that my girlfriend and I had a rough start to 2017 when she was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. DLBCNHL is a big doctor term for cancer. Lucky for us, she is a champ and is kicking cancer's ass through round after round of chemo. This diagnosis really brought home how incredibly tough it would be to have a child diagnosed with cancer. It affects every part of your life: your work, your play, your relationships, and your physical and mental health.
Thankfully, there are amazing charities and organizations that help along the way. These groups help with everything from subsidizing the costs of medications, to free yoga classes. Cops for Cancer is one of those groups helping families affected by cancer get by a little bit easier.
When you donate, 80% of your donation goes directly towards pediatric cancer research. Cancer is a terrible disease, and chemo is a harsh treatment. Many cancer treatments have long last side effects on patients. This is doubly true for young patients who are still growing and developing. This research is to find the most effective, least invasive treatment and make it available to anyone who may need it.
The other 20% goes to Camp Goodtimes. Camp Goodtimes is a "free" summer camp for kids with cancer and their siblings. I put "free" in quotation marks because it costs about $1,500.00 per child to go to camp, but thanks to fundraising like this, there is no cost to the family. It has a full medical staff for all the needs of sick kids and lots of fun activities that the kids can take part in. It's a place for kids to be kids.
I can't wait to hit the pavement with the rest of this team. Last year I raised almost $4,500. This year I'm shooting for $6,000! Thank you all for your donations and support. It's going to a great cause.
