Sgt Tom Wolff Von Gudenberg Tour de Coast 2017
My reasons are personal.
In 2014, my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Thanks very much to the charitable donations that fuel cancer research, education and treatment, he beat it. One year later, my mom was diagnosed with stomach cancer. She put up a bold fight, but in April of 2016, we lost her. Watching the way that cancer stole her life and stole my mom changed me forever.
Through both their journeys, I met some brave and inspiring people: cancer patients, doctors, nurses, volunteers and lots of people raising money in the fight to stop this disease. Nothing was quite as moving as meeting some of the young children that are fighting to stay alive.
Last week, along with members of the 2017 Tour de Coast Team, I visited Camp Goodtimes, a special camp for kids with cancer and their families. It is an amazing place with incredible people. It was very touching to meet young kids, facing the harsh realities of cancer treatment and an uncertain future, laughing, singing, and having fun....the way it should be.
So, this September I am joining committed cops and emergency responders from around the Lower Mainland to ride over 800kms for nine days through caring communities to help inspirational kids. I'm riding for my mom. I'm riding for my dad, and I'm riding for every chilld that has to face the incredible challenge of fighting against cancer. I'm riding so that some day, they won't have to fight anymore. No one, especially a child, should have to face the fear, suffering and struggle of cancer. We should do everthing possible to prevent cancer and treat and support those who face it.
I am proud to be training and fundraising now to ride as a member of the 2017 Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast to support the Canadian Cancer Society in the fight against Pediatric Cancers. Support of Cops For Cancer helps fund the best pediatric research and life-saving clinical trials in Canada and sends children and families struggling with the disease to Camp Goodtimes.
