Welcome to Dirk Finkensiep's Fundraising Page
My name is Dirk Finkensiep and I am honoured to have been chosen as a rider for this year's 20th anniversary of the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. On September 23rd, 24 of us will depart on a bike trek starting in Port Alice and ending in Victoria 14 days later after cycling 1100 kms. Along the way we will stop in numerous communities and meet many of the children and families that we ride for. While some of those days ahead may be long and hard, nothing compares to the fight that these litttle champions go through every day and never give up.
I have been a Mountie for 14 years and like many of my peers one of the biggest attractions to this career was always the opportunity to help people and make a difference in their lives. While every day at work is rewarding, nothing comes close to the emotions I have felt in events like this Tour. I have been fortunate enough to participate in charity bike tours before through the RCMP and those days in the Fall of every year have consistently been the most rewarding days of my career bar none.
We have all been touched somehow by this disease, whether it's through family, friends or just people we've met along the way. As a parent myself, I cannot imagine the heartbreak of hearing your child has cancer and then the long fight ahead in which we give so much control to our medical professionals. I want them to have the very best tools to work with and I am proud raise money for paediatric cancer research. In the words of the Canadian Cancer Society, "the money raised from this event helps fund leading-edge cancer research that is improving cancer treatments, preventing cancer and saving lives; provide reliable and up-to-date information on cancer, risk reduction and treatment; offer vital community-based support services for people living with cancer and their families; and advocate for healthy public policies."
Of the money raised by riders, every $1500 also makes it possible to send a child to Camp Goodtimes for a week long camp experience. Camp Goodtimes is a camp for children that are battling cancer and is set up to meet any medical needs they may have. It allows them to have a camp experience just like every other kid and have fun for a week, be kids, and get a break from their daily battle with cancer. In July we were allowed to spend a day at Camp Goodtimes to help us see what an amazing place it is. We all left as changed people and more determined than ever to help finally beat this disease.
Please help me in raising money to fight this terrible disease. Every day there are new breakthroughs being made and we are getting closer to a time when no one will have to hear that a loved one, especially their young child, has been diagnosed with cancer. Every dollar takes us one step further in the fight against cancer. Online pledging is secure and it saves the Canadian Cancer Society money by reducing administrative costs, allowing more of your donation to go to where it matters most.
