Off our Coifs for Cancer
The Who and the What:
Rachelle and I, along with Bo & Kingston (our sons) are shaving our heads in hopes of raising $10,000.00 to support of the 20th anniversary Tour de Rock Cops for Cancer campaign.
The How and the When:
We are hoping to raise the $10,000.00 in 4 weeks and her worships - our respective Mayors will be shaving our heads at the Hoedown to Slow down Cancer Dance on Septmeber 16, in Ucluelet. The boys will be shaving their's at the riders event at the end of the month.
Every donation collected will be split between our local West Coast RCMP Rider Marcel Midlane and guest riders from the BC Ambulance Service, Glen Polson and Ryan Hendren to add to their team donations for the Canadian Cancer Society.
and The Why:
Rachelle and I feel very fortunate...
- we have our health
- we have healthy children
- we live in a beautiful place that has always been home
- we are surrounded by loving family and friends that support us
- we have jobs we thoroughly enjoy
... all of this over and above simple basic needs and many many extras!
And so many people don't:(
So when we decided we wanted help make a difference - to give back some how, we choose to look at what means the most to us.
*That's the easy part - we have healthy kids and cannot bear the thought of what people with out this luxury must go through:(
So - Cops for Cancer - Tour de Rock 20th anniversary fundraising it is!
A local component, as we have an RCMP member at the Ucluelet detachment on the ride and he has children that are friends with ours.
The Tour actually comes out here so it already attracts community attention ...
*Now the hard part - the means to raise funds is not a new one - a good old fashioned head shaving with this event is a tried and tested successful method of attracting donations...
However, I'm sure we all realize it's not everyone's go to...
So we just had to commit - it's the way we do things out here on the edge - go big or go ... pink?
We decided to draw attention to the hair - before we 'off the coif' for cancer. All though not the best shot, this picture was in this weeks local Westerly Newspaper along with the article that lays it all out including a few challenges. The write up will also be in the Westerly online this week.
We have already activated the page and below is the link to make it easy as possible to get your support.
When we initially reached out - thinking we may get a snow ball of baldness rolling out west - that the common response was - 'no, I absolutely will not be shaving my head, but I'll give money for you to do it'! My sisters entire ambulance crew are each donating a 'call out' - 100$ish equivalent each to see the Chief's scalp!
So although we would be happy to have some company shedding pink hair for the cause, it has become very clear that the support we are likely to receive was monetary - so that's great! If anyone wants in on the uncoifing - there will always be room on the stage at the dance for an extra head of hair to off;)
The following is simply the link to our fundraising page with the cancer society and is meant to be a simple step to handle all the donations and get you your tax receipt.
GO BIG AND GO BALD!!
