Cops for Cancer - Tour de Rock 2017

Mike Gonzalez's Team

I am honoured to be selected as a special guest by the Canadian Cancer Society to be a corporate rider in the 2017 Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock.

It is a privilege to represent the corporate community and Vancouver Island, to wear the Tour de Rock jersey for a cause dear to my heart. Our proud 24-member team is made up of 16 police officers, 2 fire fighters, 2 paramedics, 2 media personalities, a community leader and a corporate guest. Our team has been in the saddle training since March and will be ready to cycle the length of Vancouver Island, September 23 - October 6.

Tour de Rock is the largest community event on Vancouver Island and has raised over 22 million dollars since 1998. The 1100 km cycling journey unifies our island communities, families, schools and businesses to helo raise funds for paediatric cancer research, support programs for families and to send kids with cancer to a special place - Camp Goodtimes.

In the spring of 2009, my dad was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer. The good news, he is healthy and cancer-free today. Looking back, I am grateful for my Mom who tirelessly inspired my Dad’s fight and nursed him back to health. I am thankful for the expertise of a team of remarkable doctors who were by his side. I cannot express enough gratitude for the hope and encouragement from so many who reached out with love and support.

Cancer has taught me that fighting this disease is not a solo venture. Cancer is unimaginable. Chemotherapy and surgery drained the fight from my Dad. And, when the fight was gone and courage was what remained, it was the strength from my Mom, the hope from his doctors and the love from others that lifted him up and carried on his fight. A chance to represent Tour de Rock is an opportunity for me to fulfill a personal pledge, to give back and thank those who supported my Dad’s fight. It is in this spirit of hope that I dedicate my ride to my many family members and friends who have battled cancer, to those who support their fight and to the kids and families who face the unthinkable. No one fights alone.

There are several ways you can help show your support:

You can attend one of the many events my team mates and I will host in the months ahead. If you have a fundraising idea to support the cause, I would be honoured to discuss it and work with you. Join my team!

You can stay up-to-date, like, share and follow my Tour de Rock journey on Facebook or Twitter.

You can also make a contribution on My Personal Fundraising Page.

Thank you for all your heartfelt encouragement and support #ForTheKids
