Welcome to my fundraising page!
Hello friends and family,
Once again I am registered to participate in the swim for the cure fundraiser this summer on August 10th, which is a 12.8 km swim on the Severn River.
I have completed this distance many times in the past, but each year I wonder if I have the ability to complete it once again. I reflect back on my reasons for completing this swim and admit that some of them are to motivate myself to stay fit and healthy enough to complete the training required. My other reasons are to raise funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
In 2012, I was busy training to participate in this event when a series of events shocked my world. I found a lump in my breast in late June, which turned out to be cancerous. I decided to postpone my treatment until after the July swim so that I could complete the event first, confirming to myself that I was strong and healthy and could beat this thing that was happening to me. Luckily for me, my cancer was caught in the early stages and after lumpectomy and radiation, I am now cancer free. I am grateful for all the advances in treatment of this disease, which allowed me to get through it with very little side effects. I am definitely one of the fortunate ones and it would not be the case without the research that is ongoing to improve the ability to survive such a diagnosis. I chose not to share my story at the time as I wasn't ready, but feel that my story supports the very reason why we need to keep supporting events like this. My hope is that one day we will beat this disease, but in the meantime we need to support those who are facing this and let them know they are not alone on this journey.
Please donate today and help me reach my fundraising goal! The money raised will help Canada’s brightest researchers make groundbreaking discoveries, provide cancer patients with much-needed support services and ensure that other life-changing work is possible.
Many thanks for your support
