Briana Botsford: Ride2Survive
I am participating in a 400km, ONE DAY bike ride (yes, powered by my own quads), from Kelowna to Delta to raise funds for the Cancer Society. The ride is going to be extremely challening but it is nothing comapred to the challenges associated with battling cancer. I'll keep that in mind as we climb the steep hills on the Coquihalla highway. This is my SECOND year with Ride2Surive and I'm back for a few reasons.
1) I've had too many friends diagnosed with cancer of various forms in the past year. I'm angry. I'm sad. I'm a lot of things, but mostly, I want to do something and this ride really feels like something.
2) I met some amazing people last year on this ride. Ride2Survive is really special and so are all the people involved. The fundraising is unique in that 100% of your contribution goes directly to the cancer society. We have an amazing crew of volunteers to support us.
As you may know, I routinely work with cancer patients in my practice. I have worked with many survivors, but I have also lost patients in my short career thus far. I'm doing this ride for my family, for my friends and for all my patients who have been touched by various forms of cancer.
This year, I'm putting some special focus into the people left behind and the survivors. I am reminded, time and time again, of how hard it can be to be a survivor when others were lost. I'm reminded of the pain of losing a parent, child, friend, sibling, etc. and I think about how strong those souls are. When I do something challenging, like this ride, and I feel like the incline is challenging, or the descent is frightening, I think about the strong souls and let their strength inspires me.
If you'd like to contribute to my fundraising efforts please do so - every donation counts! If you know someone who may like to contribute please pass this page on to them through email or social media (facebook etc) if you choose.
