Why I Relay
Up until April, 2013, I had never heard of Relay for Life. I had certainly given donations to The Canadian Cancer Society but since our family had not been faced with cancer I was not aware of their events. Life can certainly change with a phone call though. In February of that year our daughter Leslie Ann, age 32, and in her 22nd week of her second pregnancey was diagnosed with cervical cancer. We were quickly thrown into the marathon that a cancer diagnosis brings: tests, biopsies, differences of opinions in treatment plans, etc. To try to turn this nighmare into something positive, our younger daughter decided to start a Relay for Life team and set a goal of $5,000.00. I personally thought she was crazy. However, our team, "Rescuing Lives", quickly came together and donations kept coming. Our goal was raised to $7,500.00 and by event night we had surpassed $10,000.00.
That event will forever be in my memory. Our team approached each activity with the goal to win it. We took our lead from Leslie Ann who was showning us all what strength, courgage and determination was all about. We walked, ran, danced and cried our way around that track for 12 inspiring hours. We left it with the determination to be back the next year to watch Leslie Ann and her new daughter walk in the Surviror's Lap. And we were. Charlotte, born only three weeks after that first relay, was in her Mommy's arms in 2014 for the Survivor's Lap and CTV news were there to record it. In 2015 and 2016 Charlotte and Leslie have walked together in the Survivor's Lap and will do the same again this year.
Our team has raised over $43,000.00 since that first relay and are determined to meet our goal of another $10,000.00 again this year. If you can help us, thank you very much. Taking part in the Relay for Life is simply a part of who we are now. We fundraise, we walk, we compete and we give thanks.
