Carin' for Karen
This year marks the 7th year that Team Carin' for Karen has participated in the CIBC Run for the Cure. Each year our team grows and continues to be one of the top fundraising teams in Canada! Last year we had over 100 team members and raised over $40,000!! Our team has become a symbol of hope, courage and strength to so many people. This past year we were nominated for the “The Cash, Sweat & Tears Award". This award "honors the passion of North America’s most extraordinary volunteers – the people who take on physical challenges, overcome obstacles or raise huge sums from friends, family and colleagues for your cause.” I was honored to receive the following e-mail from the Canadian Cancer Society
"I immediately thought of you when we found out we could nominate someone on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society- as your success in fundraising is a true example of outstanding peer-to-peer fundraising. Your size of team and dollars fundraised each year really shows the proof of this. It is truly inspiring how you are able to grow your team so organically and value each additional person on your team, you have really created a wonderful community of supporters on your team, and you are making an amazing impact on the breast cancer cause."
Most definitely an accomplishment we should all be proud of. My goal is to continue to see this team grow and take pride in the impact we are making in our community, the lives of those fighting this horrible disease, and in our future generation.
Unfortuntely, this year has been an uphill battle for me. In February, I suffered from fluid build up in my lung, causing it to collapse resulting in extreme shortness of breath. After spending a week in the hospital, I started weekly chemotherapy at Juravinski to treat the cancer that had spread to my lungs and liver. I've been undergoing chemotherapy now for 6 months, and the cancer seems to be 'stable'. However my latest scans show a blood clot in my lung as well as more fuid buildup. This means more medication and another procedure. Even though it is frustrating and discouraging, I am finding the strength to battle these obstacles with the overwhelming help, support and prayers from so many family and friends. You have been beyond wonderful to me and my family this past year and we are forever grateful.
Let's make this year another one to celebrate - celebrate friendship, life, hope, and love. Please join team Carin' for Karen again this year - and extend the invitation to any other freinds or family who would like to be part of such an inspirational group. If you are unable to join us on Sunday October 6th, please consider making a donation. Thank you again for your continued love and support.
