Magz's Drama Queenz
Welcome to Magz's Drama Queenz!
The wonderful Magz Ross was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in February 1957. She has the most amazing family: Les (her husband of 43 years), Jamie (her son), and Steve (her son-in-law... actually her second son!). After attending Aberdeen High School for Girls, Magz studied for a BSc in Textiles at Robert Gordon’s University. After Uni, she set up a business designing and making bridal wear. She also explored her artistic voice through painting and other visual arts mediums.
In July 2001, the Ross clan immigrated to Calgary, Canada where they began their wonderful Canadian adventure. They love their lives here and can’t imagine living in a more beautiful place.
In 2011, Jamie asked if Magz would help out with some costumes for a play that he was in. This was something that she had done frequently back in the UK but left it behind when they immigrated to Canada.
"Just a couple of skirts, Mum." Yeah!
Finding that passion again, costuming very quickly took over her entire world! It was in this amazing community theatre world that she found the person she always wanted to be. She found her family (And her family found her)! Magz is so grateful for every single experience and every person she has met along the way.
This affection is definitely reciprocated by her theatre family. While she would never admit this, Magz is an absolute WIZARD at costume design. She has won many local community theatre awards for her work and has offered her kindness, patience, guidance and mentorship to many aspiring costume designers. She is a valuable and respected staple in the community who is always quick to lend her support, lend her sewing machine and who is always up for a big laugh over something cheeky. Sewing bees just aren't the same without Magz Ross in the room!
In May 2019, Magz received some devastating news. She was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer - a rare, invasive and fast growing cancer. But Magz's theatre family and “outside” friends have decreed that this diagnosis will be only a blip in Magz's incredible journey.
Even though the next year will be challenging as Magz navigates through chemo, mastectomy surgery, and radiation therapy. She is not alone! Magz's Drama Queenz (those running, those walking and those cheerleaders) will be there to support and uplift their Queen in any way she needs! This tremendous support means so much to Magz and the rest of the Ross family.
Please support Magz's Drama Queenz as they run and walk for in honour of one of the most amazing, talented, and genuine women on the planet!
(...And ya know, knowing these Drama Queenz, they are likely to break out in song, perhaps a bit of choreo on the run route, and given that they are representing Magz Ross, you know damn well that they will make themselves look FABULOUS.)
